ANGSANA CORFU RESORT: HOW THE HOTEL’S ARCHITECTURE & CONCEPT AFFECTED ITS SIGNAGE SPECIFICATION

Updated: Jul 20, 2021

Hotelier Academy in a collaboration with bratti Hotel Signage, analyses the key-factors that played a significant role in the design and specification of the signage design in Angsana Corfu Resort & Spa, one of the most luxurious accommodation, in Corfu.

As we have mentioned in previous articles in Hotelier Academy, hotel signage is one of the most important topics of discussion. In combination with the design and the architecture of a hotel, the signage directly affects the visitor’s experience during his stay. In this hotel case study, we observe that the design of the hotel signage fully highlights its connection with architecture, nature, and the surrounding area, which enhances the character of the stay and the experience of the traveller.

In this article, we will present a hotel signage case study, which focuses on Angsana Corfu Resort & Spa, located in Benitses, Corfu. More specifically, we will analyse the factors that played a role in the design, the construction, and the configuration of the final signage used in the accommodation.

The peculiarity of Angsana Corfu in-hotel spaces and how the specification of its signage, highlighted it

Angsana Corfu is a luxury Resort of the Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts hotel group. Angsana Corfu covers 210 acres and consists of 159 rooms and suites, as well as 37 pool villas. This is a sophisticated accommodation with a variety of facilities. Some of them are the 11 restaurants and lounge bars available to the public, as well as its swimming pools, i.e. an indoor and outdoor infinity pool.

The greatest peculiarity of Angsana Corfu is its landscape. It is a resort, which is harmoniously “embraced” on one side by a green landscape and on the other by the Ionian Sea, which delimits the extension of the accommodation to the sea. More specifically, this combination of nature that surrounds it, is essentially the inspiration of all its design. More specifically, the hotel’s location is part of the experience it offers to the traveller. For this reason, the hotel guest has direct access to the outside areas of the accommodation. The hotel’s architecture permits the visitor to feel like nature either visually or physically. The spa areas, for example, have windows overlooking the hotel’s gardens, enhancing the guest experience and the sense of well-being and relaxation.

This peculiarity of the accommodation was the source of inspiration for the study and specification of the Angsana Corfu signage. The signage built, should be in line with the luxurious aesthetics of the resort, but also blend and highlight the presence of nature. Moreover, the signage should promote accordingly the activities and the different facilities & outlets that the accommodation includes.

The signage’s study and specification of how to build the sign-boards according to the resort’s requests, was a challenge, that only experienced signage companies could face. The company Bratti Hotel Signage, which undertook this project, was invited to highlight the whole hotel through its unique signage, but also to shape the visitor’s journey (customer’s journey) within the resort, while displaying all the facilities equally.

The goal was from the beginning the complete signage specification, through which the maximum functionality in the accommodation will be formed, ensuring the high satisfaction of its guests.

See the network of collaborators participated in this project:

bratti Hotel Signage, in order to implement this hotel project, initially collaborated with the company KLCIII, which is the owner company of the hotel. In order to successfully complete the study, the design, but also the placement of the hotel signage, the Bratti company participated in an international network of partners who framed the project. This network includes the Rockwell Angsana Architectural Office from the United States of America, the architectural department of Angansa from Singapore, the BlackHawk Project Management company through which the project was coordinated during its development, but also the Focal Project Management, a company that contributed to the successful completion of the project.

The role of the environment, the architecture & the concept of Angsana Corfu, in shaping its signage

To proceed with the study and design of the Angsana Corfu signage, the surrounding area, the architecture, but also the concept of the resort was studied in depth. That practice helped in formulating the proposal for its signage, in the most functional way.

The design concept of Agnsana, creates a tropical and exotic destination, showcasing rare herbs, lakes, and natural springs. It promotes a luxury approach and aims to highlight the relaxation and well-being of its visitors. However, its architecture consists of strict lines with right angles and rectangular shapes. As intricate patterns and bright colors do not appear, which will complicate the visitor during his stay, his signage was shaped accordingly.

The colors used are brown, beige, and white, to match the earthy environment and surroundings of the resort. Respectively, the perforated designs that appear on the sign, reminiscent of branches, harmonise perfectly with the concept of Angsana Corfu Resort & Spa, but also of the Banyan Tree group, creating a tropical and exotic destination, displaying rare herbs, lakes, and natural springs.

To achieve the desired result, the signage of the accommodation was specified according to the strict architecture and the simple lines of its buildings. More specifically, its signs were designed in such a way that they do not overlap the building’s structure or stimulate interest but harmonise with the environment of the accommodation while directing the visitor towards the direction he seeks. The earthy colors and the perforated elements create the “illusion” of their unification with the space in which they are placed. The warm lighting, on the other hand, which appears through the perforations, contributes to informing the visitor, accordingly.

Factors that played a role in the design and configuration of the resort’s signage

In order to achieve the harmonious integration of the signage, in the hotel premises, four factors were studied: the architecture of the building, the decoration in the interiors, the lighting in each space that signage would be placed, but also the concept of the hotel. Thus, signage was created in order to fit harmoniously in any area of the hotel.

Of course, the places where the signage was placed were not chosen at random, but emerged after a specialised study of visitor traffic, the hotel facilities that should be highlighted, such as restaurants and other services. The strategic placement of the signage i.e., in places that would be visible and at the same time matching with the delicate aesthetics of the hotel, positively affected the final result, without altering the interior design.

See the implementation stages of the project:

Stage 1

Marking Study, after analysing the hotel design concept, the architecture, and the overall style of the hotel before designing the signage.

Stage 2

The construction of the signage in the vertical production of the company.

Stage 3

The placement of the signage boards by the specialised technicians of the company, ensuring an even result.

Conclusion

While analysing the current hotel project, we would like to emphasise once more the importance of signage in hotel accommodation. The study and research of all parameters (see: design, concept, architecture, location, etc.) seem to contribute significantly to the formation of a final perfect result. It is important to mention the contribution of bratti Hotel Signage company to the whole project, as it highlighted the identity of Angsana Corfu Resort & Spa, through the curated signage.
